how it began

It was a brisk, Autumn evening in Brooklyn when I stepped into the maternity store where I had briefly worked after college as their social media manager. While searching for a baby shower gift, I caught up with one of the women working there. I admitted to the unhappiness I felt in my current job but didn’t know how to find the right one. The woman was sympathetic and brought up doula work as something I might be interested in.

I knew what a doula was on a surface level, but after I probed for more details, I felt an odd sense of euphoria. That spark of inspiration I’d been missing in my life lit up inside me. When my partner and I left the store, she turned to me and said, “Jodi, when that woman said doula, your face lit up.” It was undeniable. A few weeks later, I signed up for a training and by the end of the year, I quit my job.

Since then, I have been absolutely elated with this line of work. I am so grateful to not only bare witness to such extraordinary feats, but to also encourage and facilitate a piece of this magic. It is a livelihood that puts my compassion and resourcefulness into a daily practice.
